Running your computer on always-connected internet line does not only open your computer to the vast benefits and opportunities but also invite malicious threats that keep peeking on the possibility of sneaking up on your computer. There are many choices for antivirus for computer protection, like commercial applications (Norton) which are definitely effective in protecting your computer but if you are not interested in overwhelming features by these commercial applications, you may opt into free personal anti-virus applications.
I've been using AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 for almost 4 months but since I upgraded my laptop to Windows Vista I made up my mind to give Avira AntiVir Personal Edition a shot.
Avira’s AntiVir Personal Edition is popular and well known for its well rounded antivirus solution. The main aspect that keeps me sticking to an antivirus application is whether it hogs my system resource or not. Avira seems to pass the criteria superbly. Avira is light on system resources, scans efficiently & quickly and provides real time protection with AntiVir Guard.
The installation process is almost similar to any free antivirus applications. If you follow the step by step process, Avira Antivirus system will be up and running in no time. During the installation, the virus definition is updated, so once the installation is completed you can start thorough scan of your system right away.
Towards the end of the installation you will be prompted to register with Avira. It is completely optional but if you are interested in getting updates from Avira you may sign up for the registration.
When I first run full system scan, I was quite surprised by its ability to perform quick scan with minimal effects on other running programs. As you can see from the screenshot below, there is also the ability to pause, stop, and resume a scan from this panel.
If you notice a lag in performance during an active scan you might want to consider to schedule a full system scan during off hours. The scheduler feature is very intuitive and you should be able to setup it without so much difficulty. Under this feature, you may set the scanning to appear invisible or in maximum display and more importantly you may set your computer to shut down once a scan is done.
Another common feature of Avira Antivirus is its capability to scan file individually. You may reach the option just by right clicking on the suspected file. If a file suspected to carry significant threats on the computer you can always get more information from Avira database. This feature is helpful especially in the case of false positive.
One small thing that can create inconvenience to you is a pop up that will ask you to upgrade your antivirus to a premium version. Anyway it doesn't appear so often, usually after it has completed a definition update.
If you are interested in testing new free antivirus system, I would like to recommend Avira. Who knows you might start to love this new antivirus.
