Long Island Rail Road Trains Face Delays After Slow-Speed Collision

Two Long Island Rail Road trains collided today west of Jamaica station in the Queens section of New York City, causing delays of more than an hour on the busiest U.S. commuter line.

The trains were both leaving the station and heading westbound toward Manhattan when they “bumped” each other at low speed at about 7:30 a.m. local time, LIRR spokesman Rich Mendelson said. One person reported neck and back injuries, he said.

The collision forced the railroad to halt trains between Jamaica and Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan for about 25 minutes, Mendelson said. Service resumed at about 7:55 a.m., although trains were still delayed as much as 90 minutes as of 10:10 a.m.

The trains involved in the accident were removed from service and an investigation is being conducted, Mendelson said. New York City Transit is honoring Long Island Rail Road tickets at Jamaica.

The railroad carries an average of about 355,000 daily passengers, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
